The Blue Devils were picked to finish second in the ACC on the official media voted preseason standings. While preseason standings do not hold much weight, if any, it speaks to the stock being held in Duke's talent in year one of the Scheyer era.
Only AP No. 1 North Carolina finished above Duke in the ACC standings. Duke received two first place votes, tied for the third most of any team (UNC-90, UVA-6, and Miami-2). The Blue Devils finished just above No. 18 Virginia who returned all five starters from a season ago.
North Carolina's Armando Bacot was voted as the conference's preseason player of the year. Junior guard Jeremy Roach received three votes for POY, and freshman Dariq Whitehead received one vote too.
Freshman Dereck Lively II was voted as the preseason rookie of the year in the ACC with 57 votes. Blue Devils also receiving votes included second place finisher Dariq Whitehead (25 votes), Tyrese Proctor (5), Mark Mitchell (3), and Kyle Filipowski (2).
Jeremy Roach was named to the preseason first team All-ACC with 35 out of 100 votes. Dereck Lively II cracked second team All-ACC.
